Peak foliage to take place October 11 at exactly 11:14 am.

WAITSFIELD, VT – September 9, 2005 – – It is now official – peak foliage will always hit Vermont’s Mad River Valley the second Tuesday of October, so says the Governor and community members. On October 11 at exactly 11:14 am, Governor Jim Douglas will stand before crowds of Valley residents and visitors and proclaim the second Tuesday of October as the official Mad River Valley Peak Foliage Day.

For the third year in a row the Mad River Valley, a destination resort in the heart of Central Vermont, is breaking with convention and setting a date and time for peak foliage. Now, it will be set for future years to come.

“This started as a lark,” explains Susan Roy of the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce. “True peak foliage, when the trees’ colors are at their most vivid, is very subjective obviously. But, a few years back we decided to announce a date and time as peak foliage day. Now the governor is going to back our announcement with an official proclamation. I guess we’re becoming the official peak foliage location.”

As is the case each autumn, the hills and mountains surrounding the Mad River Valley will be alive with color beginning some time in September. Visitors from near and far venture to this northern destination to experience nature’s wonder. The ultimate goal of travelers is to catch a glimpse of the fall foliage colors at their peak.

“We expect the hills to be full of color from probably mid-September through mid-October,” adds Roy. “We’ve just chosen Peak Day as a day to celebrate the colors of the season.”

The Mad River Valley Chamber has a running count down to Peak Day and a live web-cam broadcast at its web site,

www.madrivervalley.com, and townsfolk intend to “oo” and “ah” at the stroke of 11:14 am.

And, the second annual Plaid O’ the Mad contest will occur as part of the Peak Day festivities. Locals and other dignitaries get to submit their favorite plaid to be judged by an esteemed panel of judges, or the “Flannel Panel.” This year’s contestants will once again face competition from international cataloguer J. Peterman, which has once again created plaid shirts based on designs found in the Mad River Valley.
