Hua Hin

Because of its long association with the Thai royal family, Hun Han has been spared the excessive “success” of some other Thai beach resorts At this pretty spot 200 km south west of Bangkok on the Gulf of scam, King Roma VI built the vast Marukkhathayawan Palace in 1923. Open to visitors, it is billed as the “Longest Golden Teak palace in the World” – now, is there any other contender?

The original Royal Baiting Room that stands on Hun Hin railway platform looks like a cross between a temple and station master’s once. Here you can step straight from the train, cross the tracks and tee-off at what was, in the 1920i Thailand’s first golf course, Royal Hun Hin. Perhaps sadly, these days caddies no longer have to chase tigers off the fairway.

On the beachfront, the old Railway Hotel – now refurbished as the Sofitel Central – with its punkah fans and garden of wondrous topiary elephants is another throwback to those aristocratic days. Beyond here are Sweeping beaches, temples, national Parks, night markets and so many golf courses that the area could be renamed the Golf of Slam. Hua Hin is also the best place in the world to catch elephant polo. Early in September each year, crew of eccentrics arrives for the seven-day King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament, a trumpeting, thundering carnival of jumbo proportions.
